Statewide collaboration at People First meeting

06/11/2010

People First held its monthly statewide meeting this morning in Reno. Representatives from the Las Vegas and Carson City chapters joined the Reno chapter representatives and VISTA assistants in person and people from Elko, Fallon, Las Vegas, Minden and Carson City joined by phone.

The bulk of the discussion centered on the theme and logistics of the 2011 Statewide Conference. A shift from the busy month of April to May or June was discussed and planning for individual committees began. Each chapter will create and present its own ideas for themes and nominate a member for the statewide planning committee that will meet later in the year.

The other proposals at the meeting ranged from grants to fund a video camera for each chapter to a local business donating the screen printing for People First tablecloths for public events. A full agenda and more information about each item is available here. Perez also brought up the idea of a coordinated fundraiser walk for People first.

The meeting opened with representatives updating each other on the chapters’ activities.

Chapter updates
Fallon: This chapter is working on an end of the year party in a local park to being in more people to its 40-member chapter.
Carson City: People First in Carson brought in a guest who spoke about Social Security at its most recent meeting. Tiffany Hunter from this chapter said he was very friendly, answered a lot of questions and people learned a lot. The next guest will speak about employment.
Minden: This chapter also had a speaker about Social Security. Minden is a new chapter and its early success garnered a round of applause (around the Reno table and the phone lines).
Reno: There were 21 people at Reno’s most recent chapter meeting. Las Vegas People First President Santa Perez said went to the meeting and found it inspiring for her own chapter.
Las Vegas: Las Vegas’ most recent meeting was laid-back, with rounds of People First Bingo, complete with prizes. “It was good fun,” Perez said.
