Envisioning the Future: Allies in Self Advocacy

2011 ADD Self-Advocacy Summit.The NCED along with other state agency representatives and self-advocates from People First, NGCDD, NDALC and SRC will represent Nevada in a multi-state summit in L.A. on March 24th and 25th. Discussions will focus on what self-advocacy activities are currently taking place in our summit region, what has worked well and what challenges face the self-advocacy movements in participating states, achievements of the self-advocacy movement, developing a plan for next steps and creating recommendations for future national activities and policy development. Lecture series on Autism Spectrum Disorders

On the second Tuesday of every month, a one-hour lecture will be presented by the University Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment team, the Lili Claire Foundation and Renown Hospital. Each talk will focus on a different aspect of ASD and will be followed by a half-hour question and answer session.

The talks begin at 6:30 p.m. at Renown Hospital 1155 Mill Street in the MAC Auditorium. The events are free but require prior registration.

Lecture schedule:
July 13: Play and ASD
August 10: Comorbidity and ASD (The presence of other disorders in conjunction with ASD)
September 14: Sensory Integration and ASD
October 12: How ASD effects the family dynamic (siblings, parental and marital stressors)
November 9: Education on different therapies related to ASD (Hanen, ABA, etc.)
December 14: Challenging behaviors and ASD

Mark Wellman Adventure Day

On Sunday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sparks Marina

After an accident left him paralyzed from the waist down in 1982, Mark Wellman has refused to give up his love of climbing. His annual adventure day is an event in which children with disabilities can learn modified ways to master physical activities, such as rock climbing and kayaking.

2010 Employment Policy Summit-South

The South Summit will be held June 8th, 2010 8:30am-5:00pm, and June 9th, 2010 8:30-4:00pm at Opportunity Village, The Engelstad Campus in Las Vegas.

In collaboration with the Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities and a variety of other disability organizations, the Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities is hosting the 2010 Employment Policy Summit. In order to ensure local participation, three regional summits will be held in Reno, Elko, and Las Vegas to address critical policy issues related to the employment of individuals with developmental disabilities. In these regional two-day Summits, community leaders, elected officials, business leaders, administrators, people with disabilities, and others will come together to discuss challenges for Nevadans with developmental disabilities seeking employment.

A New Day: We’re Listening

The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and its Federal partners is holding a series of six Listening Sessions across the country on disability employment. Each Listening Session is an opportunity for members of the public to provide input to senior Federal officials on their ideas for more effective ways to employ all people with disabilities, including women, Veterans and minorities with disabilities and what is currently working in their regions to increase employment of people with disabilities. ODEP seeks input particularly from:

Individuals & Consumers: youth and adults with disabilities, parents and caregivers.
Employers: public and private
Service Providers & Advocacy Organizations (such as Employment Services and Partners): Independent Living Centers, One-Stops, State Vocational Rehabilitation Programs.

The agency asks that participants register on the A New Day: We’re Listening Web site established especially for these meetings.

The San Francisco event is open to residents of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington,
